GMNEA was first named DAIRYLAND NORWEGIAN ELKHOUND ASSOCIATION and was founded in late 1974, with the first full year 1975.

The name changed to GREATER MILWAUKEE NORWEGIAN ELKHOUND ASSOCIATION when we became sanctioned by the AKC/ They felt that Dairyland was not descriptive enough of our area.
